Our Supported Housing Service provides different types of housing for people with a range of complex needs including homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, offending behaviour and mental health issues who require support to live independently.
Our support is tailored to people’s individual needs, helping them to build the skills and confidence to take the next step towards independent living.
The Supported Housing team provides high quality, shared and self-contained accommodation in different settings across the city. The service offers medium support housing for up to nine months and long-term accommodation.
Medium Support Housing
We provide a total of 61 bed spaces across Bristol – in Kingsdown, Bishopston, Montpelier, Stokes Croft, Easton, St George, Totterdown, Hotwells and Lawrence Weston.
This accommodation is provided for a maximum of nine months and is a mixture of shared properties (for four to six people) and self-contained flats.
Within our shared properties, people have their own bedroom and share communal spaces like the kitchen, bathroom and lounge. All our shared accommodation is fully furnished.
Our other properties are made up of a number of self-contained flats. Each tenant has his or her own bedroom, kitchen and bathroom in a partly-furnished flat. Tenants are responsible for paying their own utility bills. We have a small number of properties with disabled access - please contact us for further details.
Our Medium Support Housing accommodation is accessed via Bristol City Council’s Housing Support Register. To access the Housing Support Register you can telephone the council on 0117 9222 000, email at HSR.firstname.lastname@example.org or ask for housing advice at the council's customer service points.
Long Term Accommodation
We manage a further five projects of long-term accommodation comprising self-contained flats – in Kingsdown, Speedwell, Totterdown, Bedminster and Withywood.
Vacancies arise less frequently in this accommodation, please contact the Supported Housing Team on 0117 909 6630 to discuss availability. We have one project of flats that is specifically for people from black, minority and ethnic groups.
For our long term housing we accept self-referrals (this means you can contact Second Step directly or we take referrals from housing, health, social services and voluntary organisations.
What support will I receive?
You will be supported by an experienced, trained staff team to build on your strengths and reach your goals. All residents have dedicated workers who will help you to plan and support you to achieve these goals using a Recovery Plan.

Who can use our service?
For Medium Support Housing:
You will need to have complex needs including homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, offending behaviour and mental health problems, requiring some level of support to live independently
For Long Term Accommodation:
you will need to have long term mental health support needs.
Additionally, for either service you will need to:
- be single and aged over 16
- be willing to accept support as part of your occupancy agreement
- have some kind of housing need - you will either be homeless or living in unsuitable housing
- have basic daily living skills and be able to maintain your own safety
- be able to manage your own medication if this has been prescribed
- agree to follow Second Step's equal opportunities policy and
- keep to the terms of your occupancy agreement.
Will I need to pay anything?
Residents pay a small personal contribution towards the accommodation service charge, depending on the property. If you have savings and other income over the Housing Benefit threshold you may also have to make an additional contribution please discuss this with us when we meet you. The funding for our service comes via Bristol City Council.
What happens next?
If you apply or are referred directly to Second Step for long term accommodation you will need to fill in an application form and give us some background information about yourself. If you apply via the Housing Support Register, we will receive this information from them. We will then set up a meeting with you to look at your individual needs and see how best we can help you.
If we have no vacant accommodation, you will be put on a waiting list and we keep in regular contact with you until something becomes available.
