Meet the Team

Second Step is led by an Senior Management Team, consisting of the Chief Executive, the Director of Finance, the Head of Human Resources, three Senior Operations Managers and the Golden Key Programme Manager.  They are supported by more than 240 skilled and dedicated staff, as well as a team of over 100 volunteers. The Chief Executive and Director of Finance are also members of the Second Step Board.

Aileen’s first experience of work was as a volunteer helping homeless people in Bristol. This led to a paid role as lead coordinator with Self-Help, a housing action group, in the 1980s. Trained in counselling and with a degree in psychology, Aileen also has 10 years’ experience working in a women’s mental health collective. She has always been interested in the psychological side to providing housing and support to people with mental health problems, and is a trustee on the Association of Mental Health Providers.

Aileen joined Second Step in 1993 as a development officer. As one of a handful of staff working out of one room in Easton, Aileen has seen the organisation grow to more than 200 staff working across the West of England.

Taking up the role of Chief Executive in 1995, Aileen is experiencing another time of great change in health services across the West of England. Second Step continues to lead service delivery development, with a focus on recovery, those farthest from services, peer support, development of self-management skills, and strong partnership working.

I graduated in 1995 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Health Science from UWE in Bristol.

Since then I have worked with people with Learning Difficulties (as part of the closure of the long stay hospitals in Bristol), with Rethink Mental Health managing services in South Gloucestershire and supporting young people to employment with a Environmental Sustainability service in Bristol, before joining Second Step in 2003.

Echoing my work with people with learning difficulties, my first post for Second Step involved opening an innovative move-on service (Molitor House) from Barrow Psychiatric Hospital shortly before it closed. Once Barrow Closed, this service moved into the community of Bristol, and I worked opening a number of new services for Second Step, including the Toll House Court, a 24 hour support, complex needs homelessness service and more recently the Bristol Community Rehabilitation Service, part of the commissioned Bristol Mental Health Group of services.

As Second Step’s Senior Operations Manager for Mental Health Services I am responsible for a number of CCG commissioned services, including lead provider for the Bristol Community Rehabilitation Service, Second Step staff in the Recovery Bristol Partnership (including the adult mental health teams, and the Bristol Wellbeing College) and the recently commissioned Wellbeing Service in North Somerset.

As well as operational management and being a part of the Senior Management team at Second Step I am also the Recovery Lead and Caldicott Guardian for Second Step. My key interests are promoting recovery for all service users, including those with the most complex need, holding high aspirations for everyone we work with and promoting social inclusion.
